Community Scripture Study here at St. Thomas has been active for many years. The study group began in 1993 as an off-shoot of the first Diocesan Renew program. Meetings were held weekly at St. Hyacinth’s Catholic Church and included participants from all over the diocese. Founding members, Wendy Marsh, Mae Hochstein, Bessie Stirling and Peggy Quinto still participate today.
In 2001 St. Thomas the Apostle became home to the group which met every Wednesday morning, 10 months of the year. In 2013 the group moved to weekly gatherings year round. Men and women meet together at 9:00 am for food and fellowship in the parlor. The study, using At Home with the Word, or your bible, begins at 9:30. The group always has prayer intentions and a stock-pile of cards to send to people for which it prays. Every first Wednesday of the month the group adds the rosary or prays the Liturgy of the Hours. Donations from the group are accepted each week and given to the Downtown Women’s Center. In 2015, $680 was donated.
Everyone is welcome to join our lively discussion of the Sunday scriptures! Breaking the word open before hearing it in mass gives us an opportunity to deepen our understanding and ability to participate in the precious gift of the Eucharist.
